rebuilt motor has smoke in exhaust
When you pulled the intake last time could you see where the oil was entering the motor at? Was it in all intake ports at the intake port opening or just a few or none?????? If oil is up in tha intake as well it "COULD" be a stuck PCV valve. Other than oil vent tubes that go to the intake and/or the pcv valve, that would be the only way oil could be entering at this point. If it is oily in the intake I would sisconnect those hoses (and plug them) and see if it stops smoking.
Was the blocked honed?
Was it honed for the rings that were used?
What rings were used?
Cast, moly, low tension racing rings (hope not)?
The ring material will determine how long it takes to seal and depending on how it was honed if they will ever seal.
If oil is entering the intake ports where the intake bolts on but NOT in the intake manifold than this is where you need to concentrate on fixing the problem.
Not sure how bad it is smoking but IF the heads were ported and the rocker arm studs on the intake ports were exposed they need to have sealant on them or they will suck oil.
The guides are RARELY bad in these heads but it is possible for them to be bad I guess. About $80-$200 depending on where you go, what guides they use, etc.............a new valve job would be needed as well since the valve will be relocated a lil. I doubt that they need guides though. They just seem to last well in these heads.
New seals are about $20-$30 at a dealership. The only thing is that you have to remove springs to install them and with the motor in the car, that would make this job about a "*****".
If none of this helps do a compression check, if that shows nothing than pull the heads or motor and see if the rings are sealing and have heads inspected for guides, seals and pressure checked.
Good Luck

we opened the pcv valve, no oil. yes, the block was honed. yes, it was honed for the rings that were used. the rings are chomemoly.
well, we pretty much know why it's smoking. the heads were milled down too much when they were ported. but, i didnt know they were milled to the point where i had to deck the block. SO, that's why the gaskets arent setting properly. seems like the only choice i have now is to get the heads flowed and then sell them. the heads have like 1500 miles on them and i bought brand new rocker arms for them.
Night Train, i didnt know you were Llyod Elliot
i was looking for your email which u sent me long time ago about flowing my heads. if the local guy (someone in arlington) doesnt flow them, i'll have to bring them to you. also, it seems like i'm gonna need some nice heads FAST. so, if i bring u my stock heads, how much will u charge? and how long will it take? do you have any heads already ported, so that i can give you my stock heads and some cash to call it even? i'm sick and tired of working on this car...instead of bringing me joy, all it's doing is bringing me down.thanks night train.
Sounds like what I went through 2 yrs ago.
GM intake gaskets are the best.
You don't need more than one gasket unless you milled them something crazy. The only way to fix that would be to mill the flat bottom of the intake or get a new set of heads.
Make sure you clean the heads and intake off with brake cleaner.
There's a write-up on Brent's page here:
http://www.bfranker.badz28.com/fbody/intakefix.htm
When I bolted my intake down the first time it leaked because I torqued the intake down to the specs the very first time instead of moving up slowly...10lb...15lb....20lb etc.
They took too much off my heads and I had the intake milled slightly to compensate. PITA!!
Make sure you have the right bolt pattern to torque the intake down. Hayne's Manual is correct.

Rage,
I do not have any here but there were some cores in the Texas Section. I saw several people post about some for $225 and $200 in a few posts entitled "WTB LT1 heads".
As far as the other qusetions E-mail me. I am not a sponsor to the site and I do not want to step on other peoples toes. It seems the moderators are pretty cool about other people mentioning my name but they have to draw the line somewhere.
