Rebuilt Motor Burning, ??

Rebuilt From Bottom Up, Bored .020" Over, Runs Fine But Is Burring 2 Qts In About 75 Miles. How Long Does It Take For Rings To Seat On New Motor? What Can It Be?

I would let the motor get at least 500 miles before I would start worrying about it. Are the valve seals new also?

I'd say something is wrong. When i first got mine rebuilt it smoked a pretty good amount on start up. I went out and drove it about 30 miles and then came back. As soon as i got back it had quit smoking and didn't burn any oil. It burns some now though 35k miles later. I hope to find out why when i have it apart this winter.

Re: Rebuilt Motor Burning, ??

Did you check the ring gaps?

There's no way you should be burning that much oil. I would pull the valve covers off and try to look at the seals. Also you might have a problem with the intake not sealing around the heads. The only way to check is to pull off the intake. Last resort is to remove the heads and take a look.

Adding more miles to break-in the motor is not going to help you at this point, because your burning way to much oil.

My guess is the intake not sealing on the heads correctly.

Ya got moly rings? If ya drown them in oil when installing they may never seat.A light coat of oil on the walls(soaked rag with oil, wrung out) and some on the skirt and pin is all that is needed. If ya drown them it will cause slick out of the cyl walls and the ring's don't seat. Give it some more time and see will they come in.

Re: Rebuilt Motor Burning, ??

my rebuilt motor is having some serious oil consumption/burning issues too. i rebuilt it 4 yrs ago and it only has about 15,000 miles on it. im gonna start pulling it this weekend. i suspect a bad ring on the right bank, i did a compression test and cylinder leakage test on the left bank today and everything is ok on the left bank.
