Rebuild a water pump?

I am practicing polishing aluminum on an old water pump I pulled off my old 96 Z28, and was wondering if these pumps can be rebuilt reliably, because once I get the technique down on this polishing thing, I would like to replace my pump with this polished one if it can be reliably rebuilt.

Just use your polished one and convert to an electric one.

The shaft will require some machining because that rear bearing is formed onto the shaft and not pressed like it should be. I'd thought about it at one time and decided just to go with the electric, when it goes bad you just replace that electric motor without removing the housing and you do gain some peak hp to boot. Only downside is when it goes bad you really can't limp it home to well, where you can to an extent with the mechanical one.
