Rebuild Parts Questions/Help
Rebuild Parts Questions/Help
Due to all the problems I have been having since i bought the car, including a ticking i cant figure out and an oil leak i havent been able to place, i have decided to do a rebuild. I am sick and tired of all the little things so i am just "starting over". The motor is ready to come out, just waiting on my buddy to come over with his cherry picker to pull it out. He will be helping me, probably doing most of the work since i have never dug this deep into the motor before. He has plenty of experience especially with ls motors but has also done a couple lts.
The car is my daily driver and has been down and out for way too long. I have to get it up and running soon cause i cannot borrow dad's car for much longer (i am extremely lucky i can borrow it in the first place). The biggest issue i have right now, as i am sure so many others do as well is finances. I need to get through this as inexpensively as is possible, but i want to do it right so i am not having to go back at this thing for a long while, or until i decide
to give it some more power. Everything is stock except for whats in my sig. i will have th eblock checked out to make sure it is ok, and i will be sending out the heads for a valve job. I am trying to get an idea of what parts i will definitely be needing to buy, also partly to get an idea on parts cost for this adventure. If you would please tell me if these parts listed are correct, if i will really need them, any other parts i may need, and any possibly cheaper places to find them. This board has been so helpful to me with other things i have done so thanks for that and thanks in advance for any help on this

should i go for the thinner head gasket since i am in there, what are the pros and cons of the thinner gasket?
While i have the motor out should i go ahead and replace the mounts? they are original as far as i know (135k miles). if so which mounts should i go with?

i will also be purchasing datamaster and tunercats. i would like to save a little and make my own cable but i cannot seem to find a wiring schematic/pinout for a usb to obd1 (with obd2 connector for my bastard child 95)
If am lucky enough to get out of this with some money left over i would like to pick up a cam and springs and other parts i may need to put in a little cam for some fun in my daily driver. are there any kits that would come with what i would need (other than the hotcam kit) or a nice inexpensive parts list for it. Not looking for huge power just a little extra kick for my dd.

The first links is called a rebuild kit for a reason, it should have every thing you need. The condition of your short block will ultimately determine what you will need. And getting a new timing chain won't hurt. I am looking into getting the first kit sometime myself.
You should be able to take all your parts; block, pistons, connecting rods, mains, etc to the machine shop and they will be able to tell you what's reuseable and whats not.
New and machined bottom end, new oil pump, new chain, machined heads, you should be problem free for a good while.

You can get some GM performance head bolts for a little cheaper

And I believe you can use the cloyes timing set which is quite a bit cheaper. I'll let somebody else verify that.

That'll save you a little bit.
