Rearend whine?

I recently had new bearings put in the rearend of my TA. It now seems to whine more at normal driving speeds than it used too. I have also noticed that it only whines when I have my foot on the gas and/or under load. If I put it in nuetral, the whine goes away until i put it back in gear and I apply the gas. Anyone have an idea of what is wrong?

Thanks

Not to jack ur thread, but I'm having the same problem, but I'm running on a stock rear with stock 3.23 gears and recently had the fluid changed (2 mos ago) and it's starting to whine. Could it be gears wearing out or do I need new bearings?

For both of you, was limited slip additive added when the fluid was changed? If not, this could be the problem.

Techno, the only time the rearend gears are spinning or under a load is when the car is in drive or reverse. Your problem also could be the bearings or races(if they were replaced) aren't seated correctly. I would take it back to whoever did it and have them fix it. But, make sure limited slip additive was used.

Madd, make sure limited slip additive was used with your fluid change. If it was, then you probably have a bearing going out.

and if it wasn't could it have damaged the rear end? if it was added and it is a bearing, what's the going rate to replace one?

No it wouldn't have damaged your rear-end because you didn't add it, it would just help with the "whine"...

Would you recommend just adding some now and see if that clears up the whine or should I take it somewhere and pay to have it looked at? Obviously I'd rather do the first option, but I didn't know if too much additive would hurt

Not sure on labor pricing for the rearend, i did mine myself. If you aren't changing your gears and you're just doing bearings and races, it's just a matter of taking it apart, press the old bearings off, press the new ones on, replace the races(which can be a pain), and put back together.

If you have a lot of miles, i would replace all bearings, races, and seals.

Question CONFUSED?

I just had a set of stange 3.42's from my stock 2.73's.
series 2 carrier, I was told that you might get a little whine,
i do have a little whine, nothing really the i would raise up a red flag of warning.
how loud is your whine?, it might just be the natural of the gears you had installed.

Hey Madd, i wouldn't think too much additive would hurt, but i am not positive. It might be a good idea just to go ahead and change the fluid again and put the additive in yourself. My .02

The whine is most noticeable between 55-65mph. When I say noticeable, you don't have to be listening for it. It's rather loud. It makes long distance trips somewhat annoying. The shop that did the work said they put in posi-lube. They did add Ford posi-lube though. They stated they used Ford additive because it was superior to GM additive in their opinion.

It doesn't really matter that it was Ford or GM. Were new gears installed? What exactly did they replace?

Were the races replaced with the new bearings?

Is the shop well-known for good service? I have heard of a lot people who take rearends in for work and are never satisfied afterword.

If it wasn't whining before, but it is now, i would definately take it back. That whine will never go away. Have them correct it now, before it gets worse.

hmm maybe its just me but id take it back to whoever did the gear for you before changing anything about the setup. it might cause confusion. and on top of that, unless you have a rear end girdle with a drain plug, youre gonna have to remove the cover and scrape/replace the gasket on top of replacing the fluid which might cause a leak if you dont do it correctly.
