Rear main seal?
Rear main seal?
93 z28 a4, no cats, k&n CAI.... For a while ive noticed that the car has a leak but i wasnt sure where/ what was it leaking. About 3 weeks ago i changed the oil and today i checked it and the dipstick shows i need to add oil. Last week i also noticed that my tranny fluid was low so i ended up filling it up. I took a 25 mile ride last friday and i lost all of the tranny fluid. From the center of the car to the exhaust tip, its covered in tranny fluid.... Can this be a rear main seal?? Since i have both tranny fluid and engine oil leaking?? Theres just oil and tranny fluid all over so i cant pinpoint where its all coming from but i know its from the center of the car.... Help would be appreciated.
Re: Rear main seal?
Transmission fluid loss has nothing to do with the engine rear main. Trans fluid and engine oil share no common areas (except maybe on the underside of your chassis
). You're going to need to clean things up to be able to pinpoint the source(s).

Re: Rear main seal?
Oil could be coming from back of intake manifold, rear main seal,or oil pan gasket...Trans fluid could be coming from the front pump seal,or trans pan gasket..Like Rob said, you are going to have to get down there and do some serious cleaning..
I guess thats what ill be doing tomorrow.... Another thing, will the lack of trans fluid cause the car to have a hiccup feel while driving at 60-70mph? And cause the rpms to drop from 2500 rpms to 2000 rpms for about 2 seconds and go back up? When i first filled up the trans fluid on friday, i drove it for about 15 min and everything was fine. Then thats when i noticed the hiccup feel and smoke coming from the bottom o my car... Which was the trans fluid leaking on my exhaust. Even the rear bumper and back lights were covered in trans fluid
So my oil leak ended up being the rear main seal and the tranny was leaking from every possible place it can have a leak. Instead of rebuilding it (since it started slipping also), im just replacing it with a stock tranny in the meantime which isnt leaking and has no known issue. Cant wait to have her finally back on the road
Re: Rear main seal?
Being low on tranny fluid will cause it to slip because air is being sucked up and air will not allow the convertor to function properly. Don't drive it like that for too long. You probably didn't need a new tranny.
Re: Rear main seal?
I see a lot of complaints about rear main seals leaking but IMO that are rarely the actual culprit. The one piece rear main seals pretty well unless someone incompetent screws it up somehow. So don't be surprised if it still leaks because the leak was elsewhere.
