Rear main

How bad of a job is it to do a rear main in a lt1 with a 6 speed? Mine has been leaking and it seems to be getting worse, so i want to take care of it soon. Any special tools or good tricks? Any opinions on a certain seal to get? I want to make sure i dont have this problem again for a while. Thanks

Pulling the trans is the hardest part.

Replacing the seal would be the easiest part. Getting to it, much harder.

Just make sure that its not the intake manifold leaking.
Alot of times the intake is confused for a rear main seal leaking. Its alot easier replacing intake manifold leaks than doing rear main seal leaks

I've worked on more than one LT1 where the owner swore it had a rear main leak. I changed the intake gaskets, and quess what no more oil leak. At least in the rear of the engine.

Also, check the oil pressure sending unit (it's at the back of the engine,
behind the intake manifold, above the bellhousing):

Out of curiosity, what is the proper sealant to use with this sensor? Upon removal of my old one, it looked like liquid teflon or something like that.

I had just done the intake gaskets when i changed my opti, because it was a bit wet on the top of the block, but its still leaking, and seems to be getting worse. Im not sure what else to do at this point. Is there a way to be sure its the rear main before i pull the tranny?

I would degrease the engine/trans as much as possible. Then put dye in the oil to see exactly where the leak was located.

Pipe dope or thread sealant should work.
