rear mail seal install tool?

rear mail seal install tool?

I Am going to fix my leacking rear main seal one of these days , I was reading my haynes camaro book and it said I will need a special tool to install it. is this true if so where can I get one? or do I have to drop the oil pan?

The special tool is not absolutely necessary. It's purpose is to install the seal without twisting or distorting the seal. That can be done if you take your time and use a piece of plastic pipe or something of sufficient diameter to push it on squarely. The seal is not that hard to install. As long as you are not replacing the RMS housing seal, the pan can stay on.

Hopefully the OP realizes the transmission needs to come completely out as well!

Take the new seal down to Home Depot and match it up to a piece of plastic pipe. Then take a metal plate and tape it to the end of the pipe giving you a surface to tap with a hammer. Like Shoebox stated above the seal goes on easy, you want to apply even pressure to the metal ring of the seal so as not to distort when installing.

Yeah, I hope that is evident from the pic in the link I posted, showing the bare end of the back of the crank.
