RE POSTING this AGAIN. 224/236 XE cam too big FOR MY MOTOR

GUys. IM looking at drivablity right now. The cam I have is a 224/236 XE cam. 1.6 .555 lifti think the LSa is 114 or 112 one of those. I think that cam is too big. I still have yet to get my computer re tunned I have the PCM forless tunning ready to go. BUt I think ima run into smog problems. I have no head work done. Nothing to that nature. IM thinking just droping in the LT4 cam for riight now. TAKE that cam out. Cuase I plan on building a 383 stroker. ANd put the XE cam in at that time. IM still diriving my LT1 as well. WHat you guys think

Without a tune these cars run like **** with a cam.. at least in my opinion. Right now I'm waiting for my PCM to get back from pcmforless for 3.73 gear adjustment. I'm running on my stock PCM right now and the car idles like crap..

If you are going to spend all that money to put in a cam, whats an extra 75$ to get the PCM reprogrammed?

I have a 224/230 and ported heads and my car runs fine with the stock tune. Of course I am going to get it programmed soon but I've driven it for a couple months and she runs great. Maybe because you have more exaust duration causes it to run bad? I actually get better gas milage now than before the heads/cam. It does idle a little rough though.....

You're gonna want a bigger cam for a stroker IMO.

So people. Whats the verdict, SHould I gone ahead and get the tune done. STALL. and see what happens. and KEEP the XE cam. OR just say the hell with it and get the LT4? I have had several people tell me that that cam is strickly for NITROUS or BLOWER APPLICATIONS. I do plan on runing nitrous as soon as I iron out the kinks in the motor

Get it tuned with the 224/236. That cam is good for a NA motor and great for forced induction. Spray it till she blows and when you build the 383 get a bigger nitrous cam. Not sure but it should pass smog......

Get it tuned. Its alot cheaper than swapping over to the hotcam

First, yes, it needs a tune...cams wreak havoc with PCM tunes.

Second, why did you select such a big split? The intake to exhaust ratio on stock heads isn't that bad. That cam is usually more of a forced induction grind.

if im reading the numbers right, that looks like the 305 cam. there really isnt that much difference with the 305 cam and the lt4hotcam. you will not see a difference in drivability with just that swap. get the car tuned and you will see a difference.

Who not get the pcmforless for your cam, and see how it runs afterward? A good tune goes a long way toward getting the most out of a motor, emissions, gas mileage etc. That cam you have now isn't too terribly big at all. I'm almost positive you'd pass the smog test with the tune. If not, you'll probably come really close, close enough to "tweak" the motor a little to make it pass and tweak it back after the test. Running it a little lean might be one of these "fixes" for smog.

One more thing, I guy I know has a 90 454SS truck with a built motor (ported 047 heads, 245ishish duration exhaust and intake cam, forged pistons with a 9.8:1 or so compression, etc) that's capable of close to 500hp. He doesn't have a cat on it, and passed Dallas's smog test. Since he passed the actually sniffer test but not the visual inspection at first, he went and clamped on an old cat from a junkyard that he hollowed one side off onto the underside of the Y pipe to make it look like he had a cat on and passed with flying colors, and went home and unclamped the cat. All this was done with a Holley carb too.

I have this exact cam in my car. It ran decent on the before the tuning. But I think that might have been b/c my puter was already a lil tuned to begin with. I put down the dyno numbers in the sig with the stock stall and untouched heads cept for the rockers and springs. Its a good cam and I love it. I rev mine the whole way out to 6200rpms where it makes peak power. With the stock stall it made over 300rwtq from 2500 to 6000rpms. Def a good cam. I don't think you'll be disappointed at all. Slap a tune in it and ride out.

Are you running the 112LSA or 114LSA.

I have a friend this cam and PCMforless tuning and he does not have any dyno or track numbers yet but the car is pretty quick, even with stock heads.

Thx,
Claude

I think Stall. I have paid half of the tune allready. Just gotta ship it out. I think ill be good. Thanks guys
