Re-installing M6 Trans

I am having royal problems getting my trans back in the car.
The clutch is a McLoud street twin . The alignment tool goes in no problem. I was trying to install the whole trans (with the bell housing) as a unit, but I couldn't make it work. I have now installed the bellhousing back on the engine. The problem is that I can't get the input shaft to go back in all the way. I have only about 1/2 inch to go. I am assuming that is is just the tip of the input shaft not going into the pilot bearing. I have tried wiggling the trans, but everything is now moving as a unit. It wasn't for lack of muscle. I weight 330 and I had two of my 300 lb lifting buddies under the car with me yesterday and we couldn't get it to go.
Is there something I am missing here? I there something special to the Mcloud Street Twin that I am missing?

Did you replace the pilot bushing when you did the clutch? If so you could have put it in the wrong way, which would not allow the input shaft to go in all the way.

If you did not replace it, I am unsure as to what the problem could be.

Did you make sure your clutch fork is pulled into the "retract" position?

I think we had some problems getting mine back in, it was either the fork, or when we jacked up the tail end of it it made it easier to wiggle back in.

I recall having the same problem when I installed my ST , and the problem was resolved by putting a few bolts in to secure the tranny to the bellhousing ,and with the slave cylinder as secure as you can get it without force....... then go and press the clutch pedal in . ( this worked like a charm )

I have had good luck with this method as well.

For one, make sure it's in neural. Don't bolt-up the bellhousing. Just make sure it's fited on the pins. It should stay there. I do this by my self so it's not that bad. slip the tranny into place, you may have to move the input shaft around a bit and it should slide right in. Now, pull it out a bit to put the shift fork in. It's a 13mm bolt. The bell housing should be loose, so move it around so that you can get your hand in there and bolt it to the tranny.

I should clarify. Don't thread in the transmission bolts any further than finger tight. Then bolt up the slave cylinder. When you push in the clucth pedal, the trans should fall into place. It's the clutch disc not being aligned perfectly that is holding up the trans.

I have done this MANY times with NO problems whatsoever.

Thanks guys, I will give this a shot tonight. I was thinking on it last night and I figure that even lining everything up with the clutch alignment tool the clutch disks and pilot bearing could still be slightly out of alignment for the actual input shaft. Since the McLeod is a twin disk high friction setup you can't move the disks (wiggle factor) as much as on a low-po setup. I have an extra input shaft. I am going to stab that in to hopefully better align the pilot, then do the clutch trick.

Thanks,
