Re-installing cam ????

I have searched and read alot of posts and I just want to make sure that I have this straight in my head. When I install the new cam and then I install the timing gears and chain...I put the cam dot up and the crank dot up which is #1 TDC and then once I put my hub back on the arrow on the hub should also be at 12...am I right? Or should I install the cam and timing gears, chains, etc...at #6 TDC ? Does it matter which way I install it? If I install this at #1 TDC, where would that put the cam dowel pin? I know at #6TDC the dowel is at 3 o clock, right? Thanks in advance

For easiest line-up, put the dots together (#6). Dowel is at 3 o'clock and hub arrow at 12.

For your question, it does not matter which way you do it. It is just easier to judge with the eye with the dots together.

Okay, I will do it that way. I match marked my hub, so assuming that it was right in the first place, my marks should still match up once I put it on at #6 tdc, right?

For the LT1, dots together is #6 TDC, I assure you.

I've done alot of research and I know that cam dot at 6 and crank dot at 12 is #6 TDC...#1 TDC would have both dots at 12 o clock..but I was just curious about the hub matching my marks if I do it this way.

The crankshaft only makes one turn compared to the cam's two turns. So no matter what TDC (1, 6), the crank hub will be the same way on both.

New cam is in..now all I have to do is put everything back together and crank it up...ever notice how when you are just sitting around the house you have nothing to do, but once you start working on your car or something, you are all of the sudden swamped with so much to do that you don't have time to work on your car. I started on this car about 2 weeks ago, and it seems like that is the same time all of my over time kicked in, etc...and I am just now getting some time to finish it up...anyway, won't be long now. thanks for eveyone that has answered my questions on this install, it was my first.

This also depends on what your cam card says your cam degree is suspose to be at. You shouldnt take a 6 degree advanced cam and install it straight up. It wasnt designed to do that. Your losing power if you do. Cams should be degreed in, period.

Well from reading the paperwork with the cam, Comp says they send out these cams with 4 degrees advance for optimal street performance and therefore you don't really need to degree the cam.

Explain to me how you know that you put the cam in at 4 degrees advanced if you didnt degree the cam? You have to find the base point with the cam in on the dial gauge in both directions then add them together and divide it in half. That gives you where the cam is, then you degree it according to that. Just sticking a cam into the hole is not a efficent way to make power.

I am just telling you what was on the card..I am not saying that is what it was installed at. All I know, and I am by no means an expert on this, is that the papers that came with the cam said that it was not necessary to degree the cam because it was already made to give optimal performance on the street. This is my first cam install and I have just followed the directions from what everyone else here has done.

Its cool, I am not trying to come off rude, sorry if I did. I just dont understand how they can say that. I have been taught that all cams should be degreed unless specifically ground to a zero degree setup.
