So in the absolute boneheaded of moves, I ran out of gas on my way to picking up my date on Sunday. A kind soul pulled over for me and gave me a lift to the gas station so things worked out. But did I do any damage to my car? I know running it dry can't be good for things. Anything I should look for or check out?

Maybe to the fuel pump.

 

The gas helps keep the pump cool and there might be some trash in the pump sock(pump filter)... Check your fuel pressure.... If your car if running fine, then you should be OK...

 

Most likely the only real damnage you did was not picking up your date on time! I have an older Chevy s-10 with an intank pump and over the course of owning it for several years i have ran it out of gas a couple times and coasted into a station on fumes more times than i care to admit. No harm so far. But as general advice goes it may be worth changing the gas filter a little earlier than normal.

 

It isnt good but I have done it before and it still runs fine.

 

probably put a hurting on the fuel pump, just because the car may still run doesn't mean the pump wasn't hurt some. The car can still run but not put out enough pressure. That was my problem on my car. It was costing me about 75rwhp because of a weak pump. Mine was because of age not because i ran it out of gas though.

 

I ran out of gas once...this was right after i had my opti replaced. I just got the car out of the repair shop and paid several hundreds for it and the car
starts to sputter and i try to pull into the driveway of the gas station but get stuck in the driveway because of the positive slope...tried about 10-15times to start the car before i gave up and called a tow truck...added about 2 gallons...drove up and filled up tank and car ran fine....WHEEW..what a relief....

But n-e-ways....I suggest you add a bottle of Injector CLeaner to make sure it cleans out any particles (if any) that have gone through your system...

 

Becareful you WILL burn up fuel pumps running out of gas!

 

My money says you're okay. Other than the pump getting warm before it shut down, you likely did no harm - now your date might be a different story.

 

Luckily I'm still ok there... pretty tough to call a girl tell her you're going to be late b/c you ran out of gas.

 

I thought you were supposed to run out of gas after you pick up your date.
