Ran out of gas...

I finally ran out of gas for the first time at a bust intersection and couldn't get her to crank back up. I kept trying but no luck and then I turned everything off and heard this weird running liquid noise coming from the front end and I opened the hood to smell a strong odor of coolant but I didn't see anything wrong anywhere. I filled it back up with gas from a gas can and it fired right back up. Anybody ever had this happen to them? Was something damaged and what could have caused that weird sound and the strong smell of coolant?

What was the weird noise and why did I smell coolant really bad when I opened the hood? I know that low gas would put a lot of stress on our electric pumps...

I keep hearing all the time that when you run out of gas the fuel pump burns its self out. Well I ran out of gas twice in the last 3 weeks The last time happened last friday afternoon. I must have started it 4 or 5 more times trying to get it to the gas station before I walked. Got it filled up and its working great still Maybe yours doesn't like you?

You're lucky hsyr -- The fuel pumps rely on the fuel in the tank to keep them cool, that's really their only cooling mechanism so when you run out of gas and keep trying to use the pump, it DOES start to overheat. When I first had my car and was a novice at this, I did run out of gas -- didn't break right away, about 1.5 years later it did, wasn't even outta gas that time! Sometimes it'll be the breaker, sometimes, it just happens tho!
