Ram Air Vs. Cai

I was wondering if any one has done a wind tunnel test to see if ram air outperformed cai or not. I have heard a lot of people's thoughts on this and i would like to hear more but what im really looking for is some actual proof which is better.

Well, they didn't make "Ram Air Trans Ams" in '94 (just Firehawks), so I'm assuming you have an aftermarket hood. If it has a rain baffle like the OEM hoods, cut that out and install a Fernco connector in place of the necked down OEM MAF-to-TB connector. With those two mods, I'll take ram air over CAI anyday.

On Firebirds, I can see the Ram-air setup having an advantage over the CAI. SS Camaros are a different story though...

Ram air is a myth because it does not exist, for the following reasons:

- Air is incompressible at any automobile speed., meaning that the kinetic energy of the air cannot be used to compress the air and raise the static pressure.

- The “ram air” nozzles commonly employed on automobiles tend to be the wrong shape. A divergent nozzle is required for ram air. Straight-profile scoops cannot provide a ram air effect.

Select one of the two types of intakes, warm air, or cold air. Beyond that its just about looks.

When I switched from my ram air set up to FIPK I felt a difference. The ram-air didn't do anything.... Besides that, the Camaro set up has too many tight bends in it.

HAHAHA.... First post... anyway, i went from a cut out WS6 hood that directly forced air (and water/bugs/small rocks) into the filter to a Vortech polished elbow w/ a SLP cai and lost an entire .1 at the track. probably my driving though.

A Fernco is a PVC pipe connector made of thick rubber, basically your new intake bellows. A 3" Fernco will fit with some motivation. You might need to boil it to make the rubber more pliable. They should run you around $5.00 or so.

Here's a picture of mine:
