is it possible for my rack & pinon to be needing replacement? the syptoms are a horrible cracking sound everytime i turn the wheel, sitting there or moving. i went to an oil change place and they were checking it out and took me under and said that it looked like my rack and pinon had been damaged. any help would greatly be appreciated and info where to find a rack & pinon for my car.

 

mine has been doing that same thing so I finally took it down to a shop thinking maybe it just needs a lube job. Well that didn't help any so they took a look at it and they said it was the rack and pinion. They gave me an estimate: $450 for a remanufactured rack as well as the labor.

no one has ever had there rack and pinon replaced??? i really could use some help on this one.

 

Is the rack itself all wet?Can you actually see any damage?Sounds like to me you may have other issues.normally the rack will lock up,or leak alot,but I never heard of any crackling reference.Power steering pump?Might go to a brake and wheel place to get a second opinion.Hope this helps.(On my third rack now).
