quietest performance exhaust?
quietest performance exhaust?
May be an odd question, but a lot of guys around where I live think that louder is better. Most of the f-body's around here sound like crap to me. Most have either flowmasters or slp loudmouths, and to me, they're just to loud. Any of the performance exhausts out there actually sound good, and are quiet? eg, no rasps or backfiring? I love the sound of my stock exhaust, and would not care if it was a little louder, but I want the added performance of the freeer flowing exhaust. Bigger pipes USUALLY equate to quieter, and mufflex makes the biggest, but I haven't heard one IRL. anybody got a clip that can compare it to stock?
I submit to you the Hooker Aerochamber muffler or cat-back.
Deeper/slightly louder than stock at idle, and city/cruising rpms. Very nice tone & medium volume at WOT. No pops/backfiring. About $90 for the muffler (Summit, Thunderracing)
search for clips on the board. i'll get mine up soon as well

I understand what you are saying. I'm also not a "louder is better" kind of guy.
I researched this for a while on the board, and from my reading, the Hooker catback ($280), or the SLP TOTL(two over the left) are the most popular choices for great sound, excellent performance but not too loud.
Myself, I bought the Hooker catback. I don't have it installed yet though.

The nice thing about Magnaflow is it's not that much more than the aluminized systems out there - but it's all stainless. Plus the polished tips and muffler. Best bang for the buck out ther IMO. Sounds great too (yes, louder than stock, but in a good way).

i run true duals with x pipe into a pair of MAgnaflow straight thru mufflers. I also have a 260/260 solid roller cammed LT1 making over 500 fly wheel HP. Sound was definatly an issue for me as well. I wanted to be QUIET and HIDE my power. The magnaflows do a GREAT job of keeping everything quiet with out ANY raspyness and NO backfiring and crackling. Plus they havea wonderfully soft tone a little louder than the stock exhaust.
btw: hooker aerochamber muffler $90 + stainless rolled-lip slash-cut tips from Summit Racing $22/each + installation $70 came out to a cool $203 for me - on a budget so i decided to keep the 2.75'' stock midpipe and i prefer the stainless tips. Brian
sold the stock TA quadtips for $23 back too

Or you could get a 98+ Factory SS Muffler. It has bigger tailpipes and flows better than the Z28 and is barely louder with a very nice factory tone. All you have to do is mod the hanger.
Magnaflow is pretty loud at anything except idle.
