Quick ?'s about oil and oil changes
Quick ?'s about oil and oil changes
I plan on Sea Foaming my engine, then doing an oil change. I plan on going to the all synthetic Mobil 1. What filter should I use? A Mobil 1 filter, or is any other better. Also, it looks like I have an oil leak coming from around my drain plug. Can I pick up a drain plug that is right from any parts store, like say Napa?
Which Mobil 1 oil would you guys recommend?
Thanks alot in advance for your responses.

and decent brand of filter should be sufficient, use pureoilator PureOne, stock size.
are you sure it's your drain plug? i find that hard to beleive that it would leak unless it wasn't tightened enough. you could just be seeing the result of the famed "intake manifold leak" driping down onto the oil pan.

An intake leak is a good guess, but I had that fixed last year, and haven't really logged many miles since. When underneath, it seems that oil is originating around the plug, with no oil above it that seems to be running down from the top. When it sits, I find a little drip always right on the end of the drain plug, and like I said, there's no sign of anything running down from above, however, I'll take as good of look as I can at the back area of the motor(intake leak). Thanks.
Is the drain plug something that I can get at Napa, and fits like OEM?
Anyone else?

The best filter I've seen is the K&N HP3002 synthetic filter, it's a sweet looking filter, even has a socket fitting on the bottom of it, I think the Mobil filter is the same one with just a different label on it. They run around $10 each. I used that one just to check it out, I now use the AC delco PF 35 most of the time they are easier to get. It's a pretty good filter from what I hear, it's an extra capacity plus it's only like $3.50. I really doubt your drain plug is leaking, I guess it could be but more than likely it's coming from somewhere else. I use Mobil 1 5/30.
Dumb question, but I've never ran full synthetic. If you run full synthetic oil, do you need to run a special filter for synthetics or will any filter for any type of oil work? Also, thanks for the replies. Anyone else.
Mobile 1 is good oil, I'd recommend 5w 30 in the winter and 10w 30 in the summer since you get snow and cold weather. Any oil filter will work just fine, fram is the only filter I know of that people will all agree sucks. Also, your drain intervals will be longer - I wouldn't change that oil until 8 or 10 months or 7,000 miles.. you could probabaly go longer in fact.
Yes, your drain plug can leak. When I first got my car the ahole before me must have cross threaded the thing - it was all chewed up and didn't thread very easily. It leaked just like you described - it always had a drop of oil right on the tip. You can get a new plug from autozone for a couple of bucks. It's a nice unit - better than the one that was in there (if that one was stock or not I dunno). Anyways, the autozone plug has a plastic washer and a magnetic tip - what more could you want?

Hmm... also when changing oil do it when the engine is hot that is the best way, otherwise its useless since when its still hot all the contaminants are in the oil & will drain out with the oil, when it sat for a while all the crap is on the bottom of the pan & won't come out with the oil.

I use royal purple 5w30 synethtic. I use to use mobil 1 synthetic. I have seen all the write ups on the roayal purple, and figured why the hell not since I can get it cheaper than mobil one. I used to use the acdelco filter, since then I have switched to the K@n filter. My buddies that own a shop sold it to me for about 7 buck, so in all I have about 40 bucks an oil change. Personally I cange my oil when the moter is cold, which I know is not the best idea, but u let it drain for like an hour when I do it. btw, I have changed my oil like this for a long time, and when I pulled off the oil pan, it was as clean as could be.
