Quick question about oil pan

I was just wondering if you can remove the oil pan without taking out the whole engine. I called a shop today and they said that i may need to take out the engine to drop it. Any help would be great.

No ! Some have been able to get it out by unbolting the motor mounts and raising the engine with a jack. I had to do that and loosen the K-mamber bolts about a half an inch to get mine out with the engine still in the car.

I was not able to get mine off with a 6 speed. I couldnt get the engine high enough for the pan to clear the bottom of the tranny. It was close but no luck. I have heard that it is possible with an auto.

That's what we had to do. We jacked the motor up as high as it would go and then loosened the k-member bolts to drop it a couple of inches.

Same here with an A4. I just remove the motor mount bolts and jacked up the motor. Also removed the Y pipe and the flex plate cover. It came out fairly easily. Can't speak about the M6 though.

I did it without removing the engine. Just unbolted the mounts and raised it as high as it would go. I changed the oil pan gasket that way.

I had to replace the oil pump (oil pickup problem, decided to replace the pump), and I had the dealer do it this time around. Yeah, I spent $800 (including Mobil 1 oil change), but it was worth it to me. They ended up removing my Y-pipe and in the process replaced all the bolts. That will make my header install MUCH easier, now that all the bolts are new!

They even fixed an unrelated oil leak for me - for free. I was pleased.

How hard is it to pull the K member. What do you have to unbolt?

I have an M6 and have had oil pan off. Before you start to remove pan remove low oil sensor so you dont break it off when lowering pan, anyway back to pan removal. You must lower K member about 3/4 inch by loosening bolts, then remove motor mount bolts then jack engine as high as it will go then pan will come out. If you have oil cooler you need to remove it also. Be carefull when engine is jacked all the way up put some wood blocks between engine mounts and K member in case something slips, you dont want to loose a hand or fingers.

What bolts hold the k member on? How many and where are they?

There are six of them (three on each side) get under and inspect the K member and you'll see them. Have I think a 20 mm head
