alright well im sad to say this is my 1st oil change but atleast im gettin the exp. now instead of latter.

Was wundering what kind of filter i need any suggestions that can either be picked up at autozone or walmart.

btw im going with mobil 1 10w30 syn. sence thats what most other people are using.

 

The AC Delco's are a good filter for a good price. There are better filters out there if you want to spend $8 - $10 for a filter. Do a search on filters, it's been discussed a lot on this board.

 

You can use any of them. I use Fram. As long as you change oil every 3k I dont think its worth it spending 8 to 10 on a filter.

 

WIX filters are also very good. NAPA carry's them as a gold filter, but can get them at some parts stores just labeled as wix.

 

well i have searched for the filter question and there are about 500 or so threads that come up in the LT1 forum alone and maybe 5 or so that have what i want to know but thanks for the replies.


i got 3 quarts of 10w30 mobil 1 syn and a Fram Double Gaurd DG30 filter. That is what i should have gotten right? and 3 quarts is enough?

 

IMO the hp3002 K&N filter is the best although it will run you about 10 bucks or so. As for the oil you will need about 5 quarts, 1 quart to fill up the filter before you put it on and about 4 quarts to fill it up. I think GM reccomends 5w30 oil, but the 10w30 will work just fine...and the best oil is probably redline or royal purple, but you cant just go and buy that at an auto store, plus it aint cheap.

alright got another stupid question it says remove the fill cap from the valve cover.

What are they refering to.( im sure it ssomething stupid that i already know)

But 5? in haynes manuel it says pour 3 into it and nothing about pouring oen into the filter. Just want to check not saying your wrong or anything

 

The oil fill cap is just the cap you would take off to pour extra oil into the engine. It will probably say engine oil or something on it. Yes you will definetly need 5 quarts of oil....not sure how Haynes got 3 quarts unless that is for a V6 camaro. You actually dont have to pour 1 quart into the filter (you'd just pour all 5 into the oil fill on the valve cover) it just helps to get the oil pressure up faster when you first start the engine after the oil change.

Trust us, its 5 quarts.
I usually just pour a little oil into the filter(not all of it, but whatever floats your boat)...just enough to get it covered good. The rest goes in the hole in the passenger side valve cover. Its a black **** that you twist off. It even says oil with a 5W-30 in the middle of a circle.

 

Yea it's 5 quarts. I use an AC Delco filter - PF454

Pour the first quart into the filter until it's full. Screw on filter, then pour the rest of that quart in, plus four more. Just saves the engine from being starved for oil while the pump fills up the filter if you do it yourself beforehand

 

Yeah my car takes 5 and a half quarts to fill up.
