Questions about lt4 hotcam kit
Questions about lt4 hotcam kit
Well I am doing a rebuild of the LT1 motor that I have and it will include everything that needs adressing, Emissions delete, and a hotcam kit. I am worried about the driveablilty and gas mileage of the car with the hotcam. What will I expect driveability wise and gas mileage out of this setup
Rebuilt LT1 with hotcam kit and home porting of the heads
Emissions delete
Mac header system with banks exhaust
4L60E with 3000 stall
3.73 gears

Re: Questions about lt4 hotcam kit
if you're worried about driveability and gas mileage, I don't think you should go down the modified road. It's like buying a hummer and expecting to get 30mpg. Mine gets between 10-15 depending on the way I drive. Maybe a bit more if it's only on the highway.
Re: Questions about lt4 hotcam kit
I had the HOTcam kit, homeported heads, SLP midlengths with removed AIR and EGR, Flowmaster exhaust, 2800 stall, intake, etc. I managed to get 22 mpg on a trip with a mix of 70% highway and 30% city driving. Around town you're wallet will take a pretty good beating though.
Driveability will be fine. Mine felt great under all conditions, didn't have cam surge and was smooth. The lope at idle is cool too

Re: Questions about lt4 hotcam kit
I have the LT4 Hot cam w/ 1.6RRs in my 1997 Z28 auto and it is completely streetable. I like the Hot cam a lot (also sounds good) and it runs 12.70s in the 1/4, but I haven't checked the gas mileage (also have 3.73s and stall which isn't gas mileage friendly). Going fast is priority one for me and I'll just have to live with the MPG issue whatever it is. And, my Z28 isn't my daily driver. You should also install a new timing chain and gear set when you change the cam, the GM high performance roller is the one to use. Also, if your opti-spark is getting old, this is a good time to change it out.
Re: Questions about lt4 hotcam kit
from what I have read is that the lsa will give you a good sounding idle but it does have a shorter duration so it won't affect your vacum enough to kill your brakes, and with the 1.6 RR's it is a definate improvement over stock.
and yeah, if you are concerned about gas, you might want to stay stock..... or get a hybrid car.

Re: Questions about lt4 hotcam kit
Check out www.eportworks.com if you want an upgrade. CHEAP work but awesome performance per dollar spent. The gas mileage will be there, just talk to Lloyd and he'll set you up with what you're looking to do.
Re: Questions about lt4 hotcam kit
I get 24 or so MPG on the interstate, and about 10 to 12 MPG in town, but I drive the hell out of it. Driveability is just as good as stock(I can easily slip the clutch uphill at idle and it'll pull the car, no surging), and I put ~25,000 miles a year on my car. IMO, for the money it's the *perfect* all-around cam. I don't have a single regret after putting it in. You'll be happy.

Re: Questions about lt4 hotcam kit
so the highway mileage should be around 20? I really only have around 600 for my cam and roller rocker set and i really shouldnt even be spending that lol.
Re: Questions about lt4 hotcam kit
Yea, on the road you'll get 20+, unless you are running a ridiculously steep gear. You're going to be cutting it close with $600 to spend though. Looks like summit is selling the HOTcam kit for $529, which will get you everything you need except for gaskets and fluids. However, I would say that you need some better valve springs to be on the safe side, and you also need to replace, at a bare minimum, the timing chain itself. The springs and chain are fairly cheap, so don't worry too much, but you'll be pushing your limit moneywise.
