question about rod bearings
question about rod bearings
Just have a quick question. I was told I have a bad rod bearing. Can I tear motor down and just replace bearings or no. I was told I could get crank checked and if its still good just replace the bearings. Is this true. and what makes a bearing go bad. I was going to replace the rod bearings, the pickup, oil pump and pan gasket. Im trying to do this as cheap as possible cause we dont have the money for what I want. I found a lt1 motor on craigslist for 500.00. He said it has 69,000 miles on it and he pulled it out of the car and it was sitting for 3 years.
Re: question about rod bearings
By the time there is enough evidence to make you find a bad rod bearing the crank and rod are generally wounded, often repairable but wounded.
Debris in oil, low oil, detonation or just plain wear of use can all take out a rod bearing.
Even if you find things in pretty good shape you will still likely spend more than $500 repairing what you have now.
I would consider buying the low mileage engine and looking it over well but don't get carried away tearing it apart. Try and look inside the cylinders before doing anything, then put some fogging oil in and turn it over a bit. If the engine is a different year or different car let us know so we can walk you through the minor differences.
After you swap that in you can see what happened to your existing engine and take your time repairing or modifying that engine if you wish.

Re: question about rod bearings
The guy is from gettysburg and he said the motor was sitting for 3 years without being turned over. He also told me it came out of an iroc which is ina third gen.Unless they put an lt1 in it, he has the tpi motor and not the lt1. Is this motor worth 500 or not. I was going to offer him 300. The motor sitting for 3 years without being turned over scares me because the gaskets could be dried up, right.

Re: question about rod bearings
I found a lt1 bored .030 over and decked .010, polished crank. Cam bearings, freeze plugs, and galley plugs installed. New oil pump.stock rods and pistions come with. He also has new .030 mahle pistons with new rings. deep front timing cover to fit double roller chain. stock roller lifters and pushrods. and stock head. He said everything is there to complete except gaskets, oil pan and intake. I have a 95 and the motor is from a 96, will this work and is this a good deal or not. He wants 750.00 for everything.
