Question about oil filter for 97 SS

Hello all...

I just got a 97 SS M6 not long ago and I am taking it in for an oil change today. The shop I scheduled to have change it will put Quakerstate Synthetic oil in it, but use just a regular oil filter as opposed to a synthetic media oil filter.

In my owner's manual supplement it says that "Vehicles with the optional oil cooler will not be equipped with this filter (synthetic medeia oil filter). My car has the oil cooler and I'm curious why they (SLP) wouldn't install the better filter on it.

Any problems with using a non GM regular oil filter with synthetic oil? I know using the same part GM or SLP used would be good, but I needed to get this done today and I don't have it.

Thanks!

Changing your oil and filter on a regular basis is far more important than which oil or filter you use.

I'll take it to have the oil changed in 2.5 hours so it hasn't been done yet.

I asked them what kind of oil filter it is they use for synthetic and they said it would be just a regular oil filter.

This is my first car that uses synthetic and I just wasn't sure if I should make a point to use some special oil filter or not.

Thanks guys.

<edit> I edited my original post to include (SLP) in my question about installing the synthetic media oil filter. I meant SLP and not this shop that will be changing my oil to clarify a little bit.

The reason why i ask what type of filter is because sometimes the shops don't even realize they are actually using very good filters. For example, up here in Canada, Mr.Lube uses a brand called Kralinator. I always thought they were no good, until I found out that they are identical to the Wix, NAPA Gold and Carquest premium filters, which all use a very good media with fibreglass in it for great flow.

Just be sure they don't use a Fram, or one of their clones (such as Pennzoil)

I use the WIX long filter.

Mainly because it holds more oil.

I use the AC Delco PF35, it's about 50% longer than the PF25 that GM lists for the LT1. That and Mobil 1 10w30.

It's not 50% longer at all, maybe 20% at the most. It's only one inch longer. I still use the longer size myself though. Just keep in mind it's not a huge difference.

Thanks for all the help guys. I love camaros and this is my second one, but I don't know a lot about cars and stuff yet. I work on computers all day, but hopefully will be able to pick up more about cars as I go.
