Question about which mufflers to get

I have a stock 94 Z28 and i would like to get a nice loud agressive sound out of it. Since i dont really want to mod it out too much at this point i dont want to get a new exhaust system. Just some mufflers. (I'm going into college here in a couple months.) Does anyone have any reccomendations on what i should get to achive this? I was looking at the Flow Master mufflers and i believe ive heard them before. They sound nice.. Are there any other options? Thanks guys
-John

Re: Question about which mufflers to get

There are Flowmaster, Hooker, Borla and other stock replacement mufflers out there.

Re: Question about which mufflers to get

Thanks. Which company would you say has the best sounding muffler? I just got done checking out the flowmaster site and the 80 series sounds pretty nice. This is probably a dumb question but since im unable to measure my tube size cause my company has me out in the middle of nowhere for the next month, what size tubes do the LT1 Camaros have 2.5 right? Thanks

Hooker >all The stock pipe diameter is 2.75", but if I remember right, it goes down to 2.5" right before the muffler.

magnaflow's nice as well. Almost as quiet as stock at idle and sounds really nice at wot. Borla's sound great but I don't know how much just the muffler will cost. The whole borla system is about $700.

Re: Question about which mufflers to get

Hooker, Edelbrock, and Flowmaster all sound very good in my own personal experience. I currently have the Magnaflow system which replaced my Edelbrock cat-back. It is a very nice system, but a little to tame. Will probably end up putting a cut-out in there pretty soon to spice things up a bit.

Re: Question about which mufflers to get

Yeah the magnaflows are nice but are a lil too tame as pointed out. The stock mufflers let out a little rumble but i want a muffler that sounds nice and is pretty loud. I wish i could afford the all out system here. but thats kinda out of the question if i want to get the stereo done and get those ZR-1 wheels lol. Ive heard mixed things about Borla. Like how they are overpriced and how they dont sound the greatest on the LS1. Ive never heard anything from Borla on the LT1 but of course it would sound a little different. Are there any particular borla mufflers that anyone would suggest checking out? That dynomax stuff seems nice spec wise and all that but there are no sound clips and what not. Anyone heard those or know of a place i could look to get an idea of what itd sound like on my car? Thanks

www.ls1sounds.com you may be able to find the sound clips there. Most of them are full systems though, but you will get an idea.

Re: Question about which mufflers to get

dont bother just getting a muffler... just do the whole setup. If you are looking into flowmaster or dynamax... u might as well just drop the extra 200 (maybe a little more) and get the whole cat back. A muffler is gonna be like 60-80 bucks... so just go for a little more cash and get the whole thing.

I COULD do that, but im going to college to be an aircraft mechanic and i need to be getting a tool set together which dosent come cheap. So the muffler is going to be my best bet on saveing some cash. Im sure the extra $200 wouldent hurt me that much but i could spend that on a nice snap-on wrench set ya know?

@ PatriotZ thanks for the link ill check that site out for sure.

200 bucks wont get you much from Snap-On, trust me I know, after spending an easy 5000.00 on Snap-On tools and maybe another 2000.00 on Matco. Now my tools are just lying around collecting dust after getting laid off and now I'm re-enrolled in college studying computers. Best advice, try to get as much Craftsmen stuff as possible, just save the speciality tools for Snap-On, Matco, and Mac. You'll save alot of money in the long run.

Re: Question about which mufflers to get

I'd go with hooker, if I were going to buy a catback system.

How about no muffler? If you still have your cat intack, I would just take it to a shop and have them cut the muffler off, stick a y on there and weld up some tips. In my opinion an Lt1 sounds great with stock manifolds, cat and no muffler. A budy of mine had it done for 60 bucks on his Ls1.

Interesting ill look into that. Is there any sound clips of this being done? Im not going to be brakeing any noise laws am i lol? Ill have to call some shops about this. Id imagine id get a real nasty sound from that.

About the tools, Craftsman are great tools. But Snap-On is what im going to be going with cause its just one of those dumb things.. Im a snap on guy cause thats all my dad had and i used to play around with his tools all the time. Im not too worried about job security either in my area A&P's always have jobs. But thanks for the advice. Ill be getting a Craftsman box though. No point in spending overkill on a snap on box.

Thanks guys for the help.
