Question about headers for different years

Ok, how come headers for my 94 are different then say for a 97?? They used the same heads, so is it just the way they are routed through the car? I ask because I need a set of heads but I was making sure I could use any lt1/lt4 head and still be able to use my headers.

Re: Question about headers for different years

Yes, your heads will work with any of the headers. The headers are different based on year due to the different placements of cats. In '96-'97 cars, one of the cats is pressed right up under the driver's side exhaust manifold, so any headers meant for a stock y-pipe have to have a shorty-style driver's side header.

Yeah, I always thought that was a really dumb place for the cat.

Re: Question about headers for different years

I think different years might also have used different AIR fittings.

Re: Question about headers for different years

All LT1 headers will fit any year '94-'97. You will just need to find the correct AIR fitting adaptor for the AIR tubes on the #1 and # 2 primaries. You also need to figure out how to connect the Y-pipe to the catback exhaust. If you have a '94-'95 and use '94-'95 style headers, then there are no issues.

If you use a '94-'95 style header on a '96-'97 LT1(like I did), then you will need AIR fitting adaptors, a cat or ORP in place of the cat, and a way to connect the '96-'97 catback to the cat or ORP. A S-pipe normally does the trick. I just went and bought a '94-'95 style cataback instead. So my setup is completely a '94-'95 style exhaust on a '96-'97 LT1. Headers => Y-pipe => 12" bullet muffler in place of cat =>catback
