Question Question about extending O2 sensor wires...

Are the wire extensions that you can buy anything special or can I just splice in some longer wire and use shrink tubing to cover everything up? Thanks

Their nothing special. I just got them they were only like $20 and I wanted to keep all my wire oxygen free. Probably not a big deal.

I spliced my O2 sensor wires when I first installed long tubes and never had a problem with that O2 sensor. The only problem was when I installed new O2 sensors I either had to splice the new sensor or buy an extension, so I just bought an extension. A lot of people say it's not good to extend the actual sensor, but I never experienced a problem.

i tried splicing into my o2 sensor and now i'm thinking that it's what is throwing an emissions code. as soon as i get my exhaust on i am going to go have it scanned cause it is running like crap right now.

Sorry to intrude, but where can I get these wire extenders? Do they connect up top and all you have to do is splice the O2 wires into it? My drivers side is very stretched, and I would like it to be right.
Thanks

I think thunderracing.com sells them and I know redlineperformanceenginering.com also has them. They are basically just a simple extension with the plastic clips on them already so you can just plug them on and go.

I extended the wires in the car harness, with no issues.

Soldered everything, then heat-shrink over the solder, then heat-shrink over all the joint, then kevlar sheething over the entire harness...

I extended the wires and had ALOT of problems. The resistence changes when you start cutting wires. For the price I HIGHLY recommend the extensions. Its a real bitch to find a engine harness after you hack yours up and find you have problems. Get the O2 extendors.....buy price, pay twice.

There is some little known information about the O2 sensors and wiring. For the sensor to operate properly, it uses clean reference air that is obtained through the heater and signal wires. If these wires are disturbed, there is a chance that the reference air will be contaminated or unable to flow to the sensor. So for best results, the wiring from the sensor to it's plug should not be disturbed. Also, if it gets damaged (cut, burned or whatever) the sensor should be replaced.

"Other"? Not sure what you mean. I was referring to the wires that are on the sensor harness. There is a heater wire, two signal wires and a ground (4 wires total).

If you have ever had an opportunity to dissect the O2 sensor wires, you might have noticed that they look like stainless steel or something of that nature. I suppose that is to aide in providing the clean air the sensor needs.

Feel free to hack up or burn any of the wires on the car's harness.

Ahhhhh. I was thinking outside the harness.

I just sent two slightly used 02's in working condition to my buddy to stick on tomorrow when the proper harness arrives. I don't think the solder and tape job ever worked on the passenger side 02.
