Question about electric water pumps

Are these used in conjunction with the mechanical or are they a total replacement? I figured they would be a total replacement, but after seeing pictures of one installed, it looked like it just piggybacked the stock one. Can anybody tell me how they work?

Re: Question about electric water pumps

Basically you gut the internals of the stocker and place the electric version on the front and it does all the work. You also have to plug the drive whole in the rear of the pump.

Re: Question about electric water pumps

yup, that pretty much covers it. you just take the stock pump like was mentioned and pretty much unbolt the front plate off the front of it. thats where the pump internals are located. you hammer those parts out from front and back and then place a freeze plug (supplied with electric pump) in the hole of that is left in the stock pump housing. then you got to take and plug the timing chain cover or leave the gear set that drives the water pump in place to keep it sealed up. then, just bolt up your electric to where the front plate was and your good to go. i have a writeup saved in my favorites if your interested in checking it out. it will go into more detail on how to clear the internals. later.
