putting plastic door locks back on....

This is driving me insane!!! Is there a trick to getting the plastic piece to snap on the actual door lock?? (The little piece you slide back and forth) Its driving me nuts. It goes on real simple with the door handle plate off, but trying to get it to snap on with the door handle cover on is next to impossible.

Thanks..

Is on a 96 Formula if it makes any difference

i have taken the door of my 95 apart about six times and the best way i have found to do it is is to push the metal rod thru the black bezel(make sure it is unlocked to get extra room)then push the little end of the lock indicater(orange and black thing) thru the opening, just a little, where the metal rod comes thru and when you think its lined up push down on the indicator pretty hard. Then manually lock and unlock it a couple of times to see if it went in.
