I oulled mine out the top and it took 10 hours tro have it stripped down to the bare block and it was nice because I could push it all around while I was builing my 383, However, when I went to put it in the top It wouldnt go in. Mabye its because of the lift brackets I fabricated or mabye because I didnt have a leveling tool, but it just wouldnt go near far back enough. I ended up droping the cradle ontp an old rimand Tire (its gotta be about 8 inches wide for the tire to clear, Then lifting the body by the Strut tower brace, and moving it back, and dropping motor onto cradle.
Installing everything! plugs, wires (easily routed in safe locations) , pullies, headers, sensors, and then drop the cradle back on took about 10 hours to this point. Then I spent another 8 with tranny bolts exhaust wiring harness tuning and so on.

wow, most do it from the top, i'm suprised. it seems like it would be much easier from the bottom, except for the clearance issue.

i'm worried about dings and stuff doing it through the top, also then i'd have to pull the radiator. just seems easier to disconnect the harness, exhaust, drop the drive shaft, coolant lines and small stuff and drop the whole k member. just wasn't sure how to get it high enough safely. 37" huh. hmm, i guess i'll wing it, see how brave i feel.

i've done many motors through the top but this camaro seems like too tight of an engine compartment, i hate having to drop the motor, readjust chains, pick it back up and so on so forth. those who have done it through the top is that complete motor? intake, heads, trans? mine is an m6.

To each there own, but I have pulled my motor from the top 5 times and it is pretty easy.

The neighbor thing is I would not have my car sitting that high in the air. I would not want my neighbors to have to watch my camaro being almost 7' in the car at the roof.

Where did you hook the chains to the inatke to pull it????? Or did you drop the block in and do it that way?

I would say the bottom gets a better end resault. Out of the motor you can torque every bolt. In the engine compartment there are many that you have to guess on. And you can disconnect the torque arm and mount the trants on the bell housing and even torque the bellhousing bolts and its no harder to line up.

You hook them to the front of one cylinder head and then to the back of the opposite one.

Who cares? lol Its called a garage door

The bottom is the way to go. Look at the dave guy who posted here, took him 8 hours to **** with the exhaust and tranny in the car. None of that if you drop it out the bottom.

Its not that tough. Driveshaft, tq arm, ypipe, drain coolant, disconnect tubes, sway bar, air dam, shifter, few connections that go into the car on the main wiring harness, 8 bolts/studs on the shock towers, 4 bolts on the tranny crossmember and 6 on the kmember and its out.

Through the top would be a bitch i think. IM me at LT1guy95 if you have some questions about it.

Dont forget the 4 bolts on the shock towers the 4 brake lines the steering shaft coupler and 2 power steering lines! Now you gotta bleed brakes and power steering! And in my case, the master cylander had to come out too. (its not just the 6 K member bolts) + I spent a good 2 -3 hours lining up the K-member with the body. thats because I was dumb and left the trans in the car.

all i did was unbolt the master cylinder from the booster, took the 3 lines that go to the brakes off the abs, and took the abs/mastercylinder out as a unit. not that tough. You dont have to crack the power steering lines open. my steering system is still closed. and the steering knuckle is cake to get off.

You guys are making it out to be extremely difficult to pull it out the bottom.

Im not saying its hard. And im not saying to do it out the top. If you need to move it around while it is motorless the easiest way is to pull it out the top. Either way it takes about the same mount of time to Remove AND diss assemble. The only difference is you are doing alot more of the dis-assembly in the engine compartment if you are coming out the top. (If you are not diss assembling the motor I guess I would pull it out the bottom) But I would Never try to put it in the top again. I like not having to worry about burnt plug wires or leaking headers because I was able to torque them to spec and route the wires outside the car.
The point I was trying to make earlier, is, I was told pulling it out the bottom is 6 bolts and some hoses and you are done. Its not quite that easy. But still the best route.

Ya, but why fight the damn headers, clutch and tranny?

Honestly I would bet that taking it out the bottom is much faster than the top. I took a picture of what my car looks like if i can email it to someone so they can host it.

Just some pics that I took on how to remove the motor from the bottom. There was a thread about this about a month ago.

Engine Removal From Bottom

I for one would never pull it from the top, I like the idea that everything is torque down properly.
