pulling motor, need ideas

i plan to pull the motor, looking like this fall.
i'll be pulling the whole k-member, how do you get the car high enough to do it? jack stands alone aren't high enough, what is safe to use?

also, where do you place them at?

i will be disassembling the motor,
i'm installing a cam, p/p the heads, new valvetrain, hopefully some forged pistons, new bearings, need to do headers ect.

any tools i should make sure to get? anybody know exactly how high it has to be to get it out?

thanks for the help,
mike

I think it's easier to get a engine puller or something and pull it out the top. I just did mine that way and it was a piece of cake.

I assume you don't have a lift... so what I did was (if you have a shop or garage that you can support the weight of the car from) build a bar that will go from both strut towers (over the intake without obstruction). Hang a chain-fall or hoist from the ceiling and lift the front up as high as you need it. You might need to put some crossties or something to support the rear so the bumper doesn't drag. This is all I needed to do....Just a suggestion.

Re: pulling motor, need ideas

my jackstands are tall enough nose of the car is 37 inches from the ground.

just put em under the front frame rails and the back tires on ramps.

you guys that say pull it from the top have no clue wtf you are talking about. much much easier this way. don have to **** with the headers or the tranny in the car. all it takes is 2 floor jacks to get the assembly down.

make sure you have a male torx set, fairly big ones. i think it was a 50. lots of sockets, wrenches. breaker bar.

out the bottom > out the top.

PM me with any questions as my car is up in the air right now and i jsut pulled the motor out recently

Yes , without a lift.....you need to pull it out the top.....its not that hard. You dont even have to break the AC or power steering lines.

I think your nuts if you really would risk your life to take it from under without a lift.

I just pulled mone out the top for the second time and put it back in. The more you do it the easier it gets but it still takes a while, but I also have a vortech with aftercooler. The under the car method is the prefered way but if your at home without a lift I wouldn't risk it like the others have said.

How is it risking your life?

My car has been sitting on HOMEMADE jackstands, for a month or more, 37inches in the air.

You can do it out the bottom at your house with tall jackstands, and 2 floor jacks.

I've had mine out twice now, both from the top. It's a lot easier than pulling it out the bottom, especially since you don't have a lift. The first time, it took me 8 hours to get the engine out. The second time, it only took me 3 hours to get the engine completely out of the car, transmission and everything. Pull off the accessories, unhook the exhaust, and unhook the wiring harness. With the car jacked a little, you can pull the entire engine/trans assembly at once. I had to chain the engine hoist to the front of both cylinder heads to get it lifted high enough for the oil pan to clear the k-member. Then I rested the pan on the k-member, and rehooked one side of the chain to the rear of a cylinder head, and the other side to the front of the opposite cylinder head. It is a peice of cake.
