Pulling crank hub (link)

Just wondering if this type pulley would work well for pulling the crank hub off.

Then I was going to make a installer out of allthread and washers. Does this sound like a good plan?

Sure you could use that but autozone sells the one you need for like $15......

You really need to use a 3 bolt puller. The jaw ones really put a huge strain on the balancer on an lt-1. They are very very tight on there usually. It's much easier to pull the entire assembley off due to the cramped spaces and the fact a jaw puller is quite a bit awkward to use.

So I need to get one that looks like a bird's foot and bolt it into the three holes that hold the balancer to the hub. Then put something inside the crank threads (1/4" drive extension?) that can be pushed against by the middle bolt to push the hub off, correct? The threads were messed up when I first got the engine so I re-tapped it to 1/2" (too bad to just clean) so I really only have one chance to do this right before I need a new crank.

You need to also take out the middle bolt and get a smaller bolt to push against the crank... The best way to pull the pulley would be to use the puller that looks like a bird's foot with londer (grade 8) bolts thread them through the pulley and put a nut on the back side of each of the 3 bolts... Then that will take the stress off the threads because if your pulley is like mine you will think it will never come off but it will.......
