Re: Proper pushrod length checking

The Car Craft method doesn't address the thickness of the mark. It just makes a thin line where the START of the mark would be. So if you use that method (which probably isn't the best), then that thin line should be towards the intake side.

Re: Proper pushrod length checking

Ok, thanks Jeff, that's what I thought it was doing, but wasn't sure. Using that method the line is in the center anyways, which is obviously "too late" for the starting point

So method you are using to get the above results you showed is what I'm doing:

"solid" lifter
set lash AND preload (1/8 turn here)? or with a solid lifter is there no preload, just zero lash?
rotate engine
check pattern

gah.. just realized I shouldn't have set "preload" on my solid lifter.. only for hydraulics..

Re: Proper pushrod length checking

haha NO preload.. lol. I just measured my pushrod length today... thanks to this thread and Ron from AI I made my own solid lifter by gutting it and puttin a bolt in it so the cup hieght was the same as my comp oness. Worked slick. I ended up with 7.150. With heads shaved .020, block decked .020, .027 cometic head gasket, and .050 longer ferrea valves. So not bad, and I am glad I checked it!

Are those comp lifters solids or hydraulics? If hydraulics, did you allow for preload in the (correct spelling) height measurements of your solid checking lifters?

awe shart! no I didn't. But, I will only be runnin 1/4" preload. So, with the fine threads, it won't be too bad. I actually could have run the 7.2 but I opted for 7.150 after talkin with Ron. So, I should be good there!

The way ya said ya did it will be fine. 1/4 turn ain't gonna make ya or break ya.

Re: Proper push rod length checking

When most companies offer off the shelf push rods at .050 length difference, how ya figure .020 is gonna hurt.
I get mine made to the length I measure but most people don't and get PR's in .050 length differences and they ain't on the side of the road with PR's all hanging out the valve covers. Those big Co's must figure is not important enough to worry about if it's in .050 length increments.

Hehehehe. I'm not that far from Manton Pushrods. I bought the adjustable pushrod from Comp Cams. I also like the device that slips over the stud. I think I will buy one of those also.
