Problems with shifter moving out of PARK! (Has to do with brake pedal I think!)

I did Shoeboxes cable adjustment, but no luck. Today I found that it is related to the brake pedal. If I get it to shift out of park (by force) it will shift fine, and when I return to park, it will shift fine out, unless I let out the brake pedal and push it back in. Then it is stuck again.

So here is a simple way to look at it.

first - i get in and push the brake, and have to force the button in and finally get it out of park.

second - i get where i am going, and return it to park.

third - i keep the brake in from when i returned it to park and shift out of park and it is fine

fourth - i return to park and let brake out, then when i push the brake back in, i have to force it out of park

So it obviously has to do with the brake releasing it to shift out of park, but I have no clue what to do about it.

Thanks,
James

I have been having this problem for a long time now. And i have no idea what it is either. But yeah that shifter button just will not budge sometimes. I think it has to do with the car being cold, because in cold snaps it gets harder and harder to do. BUt when i cant move it, if I let the car warm up, it will eventually work.

I dont get it!

Whats weird is my girlfriends Jetta had the exact same problem superficially..but what it turned out being was some switch behind the brake pedal that allerted the computer it was fully depressed and would allow the driver to get out of park, it was a simple thing to fix. This may be dumb...but does anyone know if our cars have a similiar mechanism?

Yeah my Corvette does the same thing when it is cold. I found if I let the car warm up for about 10 min. it will release. Once it releashes, it doesn't do it again. Kevin

My car does the same thing, but it seems when I apply the e-brake before I put my car in park, it comes out easier. But mine gets so bad that it feels like I am going to rip the whole console out of the car before the shifter moves. It's strange.

locked-in PARK

Hey guys, long time since I chimed in... My 95Z has the problem Every Winter during past 3 years. It only occurs during winter months. I tried oilin everything within that shifter area, but don't help. I have to use both thumbs to press that button. After warmup, the unit's fine. WTF.... of course there's none aftermarket shifters for our elect tranny, so I'm stuck. I'd really like someone to figure it out. My thought is to take apart the unit and drill a hole through the stalk. This would be parrallel to the floor, then stake a paperclip through the hole which would hold the button depressed at all times.!!! IT's THAT FRUSTRATING.
