problems with pacesetter headers

anybodys pacesetter header LTs hit the underside of the car at the collector? both of mine do but if i unbolt the crossmember and lower the tranny it tilts the motor and lowers the headers to where i have clearance. just wonderin if i get longer bolts and do this till i have clearance would this angle hurt anything by the driveshaft and torque arm being lower. cuz i know that the angle of the rearend is important but i dont know anything about suspension yet.

Yeah, you can't do that. I can't tell you what's wrong, but just letting you know that you can't just drop the tranny to fix it. It will screw up all the angles of the driveshaft. Same as if you were to change the angle of the rearend.

Thats weird man, I just installed mine and I have some clearance. I run poly mounts and they are super stiff. Maybe your motor mounts are shot and keeping your engine too strait, and not at the right angle...just a suggestion.

Re: problems with pacesetter headers

Mine did when I installed them. Fixed it through a combination of taking a hammer to the floor and having my neighbor bring it to his shop and heat up the floor/top of the collector to move them. Its fine now.

I had the same problem with my tpis headers just bolted everything up on a drive on hoist and used a big nylon cargo strap and a piece of steel tubing 8 feet long. Just bent the collector down easy, do it all the time with the older muscle cars. Dont be scared just pull !.

Did you do that while the headers were bolted to the aluminum heads? Personally, I wouldn't do that. I would look to other options first. I would hate to screw up the heads.

Motor mounts are pretty easy to do and aren't that much money. Give it a whirl, it may fix the problem. Really the hardest part of the motor mount install for me was watching the ER doctor sew my hand up from the wrench slipping off the motor mount bolt....but at least I finshed the mount swap before i went. lol

You will not damage the heads, the headers bend much easier than you would think and that trick is somthing that people installing headers for a living do all the time. I would much rather bend the tubes than butcher the car pounding in the floor.

Re: problems with pacesetter headers

when you bent em did you heat the primaries or will they bend easily cold?

That's what I did 2 weeks ago. Put a 1/4 spacer between the floorboard and trans crossmember. That gave me the clearance I needed for the y-pipe that was banging on the floorboard. I do have a Spohn adj. TA though. When I went to correct the pinion angle I was suprised to find it had not moved very much. It was at zero instead of -1. This time its set at -1 1/2. I'm really pushing the envelope now. LOL

Re: problems with pacesetter headers

i have the same problem. they don't hit all the time, just when the engine is really torquing down such as 2nd or 3rd gear at 20 miles an hour. try to pass some granny and all you can hear is thump thump thump. i'm thinking motor mounts, tranny mount will take care of it.
