i have removed my front bumper support from my 97 transam and now i am having problems with the engine gettin hot. i dont drive the car very often but didnt start having the problem until i removed it. i have a fairly new 160 t-stat, csi waterpump and have had no problems with cooling until now. anyone had any problems like this or have any ideas

Perhaps the bumper is sagging and cutting off the air. My advice would be to put the support back on.

 

Look at the plastic that channels the air to the rad. It has no suppurt,unless ya built a metal bracket where the 3 push in's go. Make a bracket out of 1/8" x 1" flat bar from the plastic piece on top in a kind of "U" and support it like the bumper did. Drill the plastic on top and bolt it on.

 

You didn't remove enough weight to ever seea difference on the street. Put the support back on.

 

That thing weighs like 3 pounds. Put it back in and go on a diet the day before you race.

 

its not driven on the street very often and i do believe it ways more than three pounds but i will look at the plastic that channels air to the rad. thanks

 

Mine was 22Lbs Savings AFTER I cut it up and put the parts that hold the Fog lights back on. I also used Light wieght fog lights for another 4 Lbs

Compared to what it cost for tubular K-member and A-arms that only took 33Lbs off the front it was a great mod!

 

Yes... my Formula lost 20+# with the front crash-pad removal, and a similar amount for the rear pad..... an good way to lose weight on a TRACK car. 1racerdude gave you the most likely answer. The stock baffle, that channels the air from under the car to the front of the radiator has no support when you remove the crash pad. And the back edge of the lower front bumper cover has no support. I took a piece of light weight aluminum angle stock and made a short support to bolt the radiator baffle and the rear edge of the lower bumper together, and connected the angle to the ends of the subframe horns (where the crass pad steel brace bolted) with nylon ties. Never had a problem with cooling.

And you do still have the air dam in place.... right?
