Problem with oil pump pickup tube...

I have the Melling select oil pump and the OEM pickup does not fit very tight at all, it requires welding or a fastener system of some kind.

I brazed the tube in in position to ensure correct alignment and then took it to be welded at work. The welder could not weld the entire joint due to the spot braze that I did, now there is a very very slim chance that air could get sucked in at the joint and affect oil pump pressure since the entire area of the joint is not welded.

All I need to do is apply somthing to the joint to seal it up good like JB weld, #1 black permatex RTV or maybe something else. Obviously whatever I use will have oil on it nearly all the time and I dont want somthing that will fall off down the road.

Any suggestions for sealing this joint where the tube is connected to the pump?

Have welder debraze it and weld the whole thing. Check around with professional welders (those with the know-how and equipment) or perhaps the entire tube can be brazed---I don't know. When it comes to fusing metals, it takes someone in the know.

Example: A mechanice working on my header install decided to re orient the egr tube in different direction, so he cut it off and rewelded it----------problem: the headers were ceramic coated and the weld didn't last, so I wound up having the headers removed, de ceramiced, welded, and re ceramic. All just because the mechanic didn't realize he couldn't weld over the ceramic coating.

Here is a phot of what I am talking about:

Welder did not like the idea of grinding the brass off and welding in that area. He mentioned that the metal properties are already affected and suggested black rock hard pematex which I have never heard of. I thought the hard permatex was still regular old RTV. Maybe I am wrong. He aso does not want to weld down nea the flat mating surface where it attches t the pump.

There is no doubt about this tube falling out, aint gonna happen. I just need to seal the joint area where it has no weld.
It looks like I might be stuck with a sealing option like I stated above.

dude go to someone else....that weld on the lower par looks like bubbl gum.

all you have to do is heat the braze up and clean up the area...very simple to do. Try somewhere else would be my advise

any welder should be able to do this in 15 min its very simple.....and your probly only looking at $10 or a six pack

Ya have to remove ALL the brass or nothing else will stick. Reweld the brass area and tie it in to the rest of the weld.

I think I understand that now, however I want to wrap this short-block up this weekend.

Can I braze the rest of the seam just like I did for the "spot". Will this in any way affect the existing welds? If not I am doing it tonight.

Yes you can, but IMO it is too much heat on the pump part. Just tie in the brazed part.
