problem with my t56 (rattling)

i just put a t56 in my '87 camaro. it came from a '94 formula that was involved in a rollover. it shifts fine and all that but if i let out the clutch kinda quick something clunks in the trans. also, if i'm driving and let off the gas completely while in gear it will also make clunking sounds continuously, but it doesn't make noise while under load like when i'm accelerating. any ideas? am i looking at a rebuild pretty soon? the clutch is a new mcleod one and the pressure plate is a new lt4 one from GM. TIA

Have you checked the u-joint's on the driveshaft?

i haven't personally checked them but my friend was under there the other day when i was adjusting my pinion angle and he said they felt a bit loose. thing is, though, i was using the same driveshaft and joints when i had the T5 trans in there and it never made noise. u joints are cheap enough, though, so i might as well change those i suppose

The T56 is a very noisy tranny. If it shifts fine than there's probably no internal problems. What you describe is pretty normal.

If you switched from a T5 to a T56 you would have to get the drivehshaft re-measured. From what I recall the T56 is a much longer transmission. If it's too long/short you're liable to case rearend damage.

I don't know if the T5 and T56 trans are the same length, but you may need a custom length drive shaft or possibly just a drive shaft from a 4th gen car. It could be the driveshaft you are using is either too short or too long, just a suggestion I don't know the particulars of a T5. If that's not it new u-joints would be a good idea as well, there really isn't supposed to be any play in u-joints, if there is it could be causing that banging.

the t5's and t56's are the same length, just the shifter and trans mount sit a little farther back, which is fixed with a custom crossmember and a longer shifter hole, so the thirdgen driveshaft is used. everyone that i know of that has done the swap retained their thirdgen driveshaft with no prbolems, so it's not driveshaft length that's causing the noise. and it really seems like it's too loud to be considered normal. i guess i'll just replace the ujoints and go from there. thanks for the help
