The problem with the MSD Opti-units.

There have been reports of the the MSD Opti-spark units having flaws such as the rotor rubing and wat not. I have one of these that I installed on my LT1 before putting it in my IROC. Would this cause my car not to start? The car cranks, sputters and dies. Let me know what you think.

I think it is highly unlikely. It is more likely that something is wrong with the install, like the drive pin isn't in the right slot, or the plug wires aren't in the right order, etc.

If it was working fine on one car and all of the sudden doesn't work when swapping it to another, I would double check your installation.

Actually this is entirely possible. I installed mine in February, and last week my car died at a stop sign. The cause was lack of spark to the plugs, although it was reaching the opti. Upon pulling off the old opti I found it to be covered in red dust from the rotor rubbing, thus blocking both the contacts and the optical sensor.

The way this reads I can't tell if your talking about your original Opti or you MSD one. Also have you up dated to vented with the new MSD.

True, I guess I wasn't very clear. I meant after I pulled off the MSD opti cover this time I found the red dust. And yes, it's been vented.

OutKast: I'm fairly certain the rotor wasn't loose as when I pulled it off I had to work at it a little to free the rotor from the shaft (I have no idea what it's called) it's sticks into. Also, no pinching of the o-ring that I can tell as MSD has previously claimed causes this. I'm sending it in to them and waiting to see what they say. If anyone wants, I can post pictures later.

Had the same problem after i put in the cap and rotor in my car along with wires and new spark plugs , same thing though had the red dust but didn't effect the way the car drove after every thing was redone, are you sure the dowel is in the right spot, also my car didn't start after everything was lined up right because the spark plugs were fowled out so bad, had the NGK TR55 and are junk after they get flooded. put new plugs in and started right up. hope this help

I replaced the plugs at the same time as the opti in Feb, plus it was a GM shop that told me the spark wasn't reaching the plugs. Only thing I can figure is that it's the dust as everything else was aligned perfectly.
