Prelube motor?

I haven't cranked my car in 4 years due to it being broke down. I'm about to fix it and I was told that I need to prelube the motor before I crank it. How do I prelube it? Thanks for any help.

I guess you could pull the intake off and prime the system, however I would pull the coil wire off, cut the fuel supply off and crank it untillit had oil pressure, Should take around 30 seconds or less. Good idea to change the oil as well

Re: Prelube motor?

Two ways..maybe three.
1) remove the intake manifold and, using a SBC oil pump priming tool, spin the oil pump.
2) use an oil accumulator plumbed into the oil system.
Or
3) pull the coil wire and spin the engine over using the starter.

All will work. I, personally, wouldn't do number 3

If you do number three, maybe don't do 30s all at once - that's a little hard on the starter.

Thanks. What do you mean by number 3 and spin the engine using the starter? Are you talking about turning it over by key with the coil wire off so it doesnt crank?

Drain the fuel from the tank. It's probably nasty. Drain & replace oil. Fresh fuel in tank. unplug coil(s) & fuel supply, crank w/ starter a few times. I've also heard of people putting a squirt of oil in each cylinder spark plug hole for good measure.

Yes, The bearing have had an entire year to let the oil escape through the clearances. With no oil in the passages you're looking at a dry bearing start. You really must prime the engine....

What is the point of that? You are still rotating the engine with no oil. Is it that it is spinning slower via the starter than combustion that brings you the advantage?

Re: Prelube motor?

My engine sat for 5 years before i installed it. I put it in, changed the oil and started cranking. It wouldn't start because the injectors were stuck and had to be cleaned. Im sure you will have to do the same. Once cleaned and installed it fired right up. That was over 10 years ago.

IMO it's worth the peace of mind to just pull the intake and prime the system the correct way. I can't recommend using the starter to prime the system as it kind of defeats the purpose.

Yes, First the bearings will not be completely dry, It will have a oil film on them. While the rotating assy will be turning it will not hove the downward push of combustion with no oil pressure between the bearing and journal. Also if you dont have a correct timing priming tool and have a makeshift like most of us do, one head wont get lubed if you pull the intake and prime it at the pump.

The engine has just been sitting, it has already been primed.

Re: Prelube motor?

For four years nonetheless. Whether it's necessary or not, I'd still pull the intake and prime it.

Re: Prelube motor?

Intake gaskets are cheap and easy to replace. Bearings aren't. Do it right and pull the intake off to prime it.
