Power steering problems

A technical questions for the mechanical experts here. I've had a problem with the power steering in my '94 Z28 for the past 3 years. The problem is no boost below 2K rpm. The problem started while I was in grad school, parallel parking was a wrenching and noisy task. A year and a half ago I put a new re-manufactured pump on, it worked for 3-4 weeks then the steering reverted back to its old habits. Yesterday I had a rack off a '96 Z put on, the the shop called to tell me it didn't eliminate the problem.

So I'm left with the conclusion that the re-manufactured pump must have been a rare bad case. Since I have boost above 2K and for the first half turn of the wheel, can I replace the valves? Are they in the lines from or to the rack, or in the pump? I'm getting a little frustrated, esp. after spending the money on another rack. Any insights on what to tackle next will be greatly appreciated.

You could try another pump. Sometimes you just get a bad one. If your unlucky like me you'll seem to get that one defective part in batches of hundreds that work fine. I got a bad throwout bearing the first time around. You could ask about getting a used pump from a salvage yard like fparts salvage at www.fparts.us

Thanks for the info, I emailed them about a pump. Although since I live near Chicago it'll be any better than an autozone re-fab.

Kinda good to hear someone else had a problem with a re-fab unit.
