Posi Rear
Posi Rear
OK guys i went to go to the guy to see ho wmuch it would be to install for my 3.73 he said it would be 200 for gears 100 for install kit and 200 for installation. That is 500 bucks. HE said it would be pointless to do it now because if i got it at the track i would just be spinning one tire all the way down the track. He said i need like an easton rear. Could you guys post a link to one so i can see price. He said to get the rear because it would be pointless to do the gear installtion then come back for the rear. Is he right. Help me out thanx.
ALL V8 4th Gens come with a limited slip differential that works just fine, unless you manage to wear it out. I would agree that you need a posi, and an Eaton unit would be a good one, but you already have a limted slip/posi rear from the factory.
If you've got a V6 rear axle for some reason, you need the limited slip rear. Go to SLP and look for their "takeoff" units from the cars they converted to Firehawks.
But you shouldn't need one. Might want to find another shop.....

Do you have an LT1 4th Gen F-Body?
If so, you have a Posi rear, and all you need to do is swap the gears. Go to T. Byrne Motorsports or Thunder Racing online catalog, and get a set of Motive or Superior gears in the ratio you want, and get the install kit with them. Take them to a qualified shop. $200 for install sounds a little high, but typical.
When you get done, assuming your car has the "normal" posi, like every other V8 4th Gen, you will be able to lay down 2 wide strips of rubber.... not one.
You do not need to buy an Eaton rear. If you plan to use slicks, and are driving an M6 with 5K clutch dumps, you will be better off saving your money and buying a complete 12-bolt rear axle assembly.... the stock 10-bolt axle will not last with a lot of abuse. But a 12-bolt is a $2,000 - 2,800 investment.
If you have a V6, non-posi rear axle for some reason, find a complete rear axle assembly out of a V8, and you will get the posi and disc brakes. Typical price for a used axle assembly out of a V8 is $250-300.
