porting the stock mass air

Ok. I did a search, and this seems to be a contoversial topic. If the computer is tuned for the ported mass air meter, is there any rear wheel horsepower to be found. I have a cam and some slightly worked heads. Any input is appreciated

I'm doing the same thing. I'll be putting my ported heads/cam with a ported mass air flow I'll soon find out...

Re: porting the stock mass air

yeah yall go ahead and when you try and tune for the cam and heads it will be morre difficult. that stock maf will suply more air than your car can inhale. and if you new how impotant it was you wouldnt mess with it.

and since your car already is gettign all the air it needs, and will still have enough air (with stock MAF) after the heads and cam. you will not gain anything. it does absolutly nothing. execpt screw up a good part.

it will suport 550 rwhp it not a issue until then. the exact number i dont know but the car (pcm) measures it in grams per second.

97Z-M6,

What is your oppinion on descreening the MAF then? I would like to know about this because i am planning on doing it in the next couple weeks. Oh yea im expecting in the 450 rwhp range with my setup.

I ported mine out and removed the screen a while back. I actually noticed a little better throttle response. I would be leary of doing it though. I was lucky that i didnt mess anything up.

Re: porting the stock mass air

on a STOCK motor you wont notice many problems. When you first do it on a stock motor it feels faster and a little more responsive ( mostly in your head) but soem of it is due to the car gettign richer at an idle and leaner at the upper RPMs. Then the BLocklearns in the PCM take over and in a couple of days have tuned out the fuel curve and now you have the same power and a ruined piece.

Now putting a ported MAF on a car with heads/cam will definatly show problems. just wait until you try and tune that on the dyno....good luck boys

P.S. Descreening the MAF is fine

Re: porting the stock mass air

I've been in long discussions about this before...

Basically porting it screws things up, fairly badly from a tuning standpoint. People claim to have no problems or see an improvement, but in reality, they are crap-shooting and getting lucky with the re-calibration of the sensor.

De-screening it is heavily arguable. No one hads really come to an conseous about it, but from an engineering standpoint, and fluid dynamics standpoint; there is a reason for the screen to be there on a "typical" intake track (Not including the WS6 setup). If you want to get into the discussion about this, we can, but I won't for now.

What about Granatelli MAFs?

Not recommended for multiple reasons, although from a PCM standpoint, no one but Grantenelli knows what the REAL calibration is, thus another crap-shoot on the MAF tables in the PCM.

If you just have to screw with it then take the ends off lightly sand them with 1500 to 2000 grit sand paper until smooth as possible. Then get some mothers mag and aluminum polish and finish her up, but do not cut out the fin. GM did'nt just have some extra metal laying around and thought they would put it there!!!
