Port the heads for headers

Hey I had a question,
Whats the point in getting longtubes or shortys when their purpose is to ease out the exhuast fumes, but the holes in the heads are not big enough to match the size of the header. I hope I dont sound stupid, but I hope you get what I mean. Would you have to port the heads to make those holes bigger to get the maximum benefit from the headers? I just wanted to know. Thanks

You don't need to port it because the stock manifolds are already choking the hell out of what it's capable of blowing out.

Look at the entire exhaust manifold compared to any header - even the tiny Edelbrocks. The manifold has the 4 ports run into one which is about the same size as one of the 4! On the headers, the primary for each port is larger than the manifold, longer, and they dump into a collecter larger than any single primary.

Headers make a big difference on an LT1 by allowing the engine to do what it was already capable of doing - but couldn't due to those pesky manifolds.

Make any sense?

Wow.... Cool, I didnt think it that far to realize that those holes were already big but GM decided to make smaller manifolds to choke the hell out of the engine.....

Ok with that being said, I am thinking of getting Hooker Lt's, Im sure that the holes on those headers are pretty big, would they fit prefectly on the holes on the Lt1 heads, Or is there a little porting for those too.... Or are the holes on the Lt1 big enough for those headers too?

You should be able to just bolt them on without any modification to the exhaust ports on the head. I put Dynatech longtubes with 1.75" primaries on my car with no problem and I wouldn't go much bigger than that on a car unless it was pushing 800 HP or something ridiculous like that. So buy the headers bolt em on and have fun

Having exhaust ports as large as header primaries isn't a good thing IMO. That's part of the problem with the handicapped 80% E/I ratios the LSx guys like to generate with their megaphone looking exhaust ports.

Leave it alone & don't worry about it yet :)
