Port heads or 1.7 rr's????

Well im pulling the heads off because i blew a head gasket and i plan on doing a little something while im down there.

I dont have the money to spend on both but id like to do one or the other. And i was just curious which you all would suggest i do.

And in case someone says port the heads now because you dont have to pull the heads to do springs/rr's later. My next mod is going to be pulling the entire motor apart come spring. So Thats a mute point.

Im pretty sure the RR's springs would be cheaper than a port/valve job right now. And i would keep the 1.7's with my next cam as well.

So which of the two would you do?

I'd do the rr's now, and get the heads done when you pull the motor. Because if you do the heads now, you might decide you want to go bigger with the cam you decide on in the future. Springs/valves will need to be choose at the time of the cam purchase. I just think it makes more sence to do rr's now, and wait and set everything up right later with the new motor build up.

I would do the heads now, as that will be a big factor of downtime when the motor build comes along. Plus you will see some pretty good gains, as you can really get some good flow out of LT1s for a decent price. Just have Lloyd do an LE1 job so you get all new components on the heads and a fresh valve job. Just make sure that convey your future plans when you get them ported so the porter has an idea of what to shoot for.

I can see good gains out of the 1.7's as well. Im kinda leaning the 1.7 way as well, just because replacing parts while im in there cant really hurt at all. And i think that in itself makes it more important to do.

To do it the right way you really should get the heads milled, a valve job, new seals, and new springs right now anyway. That is just a basic head rebuild. Lloyd can port them for not a whole lot more

You probably won't be able to use the 1.7 rockers on a different cam since most "popular" cams have lift numbers in the mid 500s or more and 1.7 rockers will raise it way up, unless that is part of your plan.

It's a lot of work to pull the heads. Why "waste" the effort? Jus go ahead and port them while they're off. You can do rockers and springs anytime.

might as well port the heads. You'll probably see more gains that way. 1.7's on a stock cam would work but if you have a bigger one in there remember your heads won't flow it all without being ported!

Well, even though more people said port the heads, this is my daily driver. And i can't be without the car while my heads are off getting ported that long. So now its 1.7's and new springs, studs, and maybe some new pushrods. :P

Running a higher RR will "act like you have a big lift, if you are running an aftermarket cam, then I would do heads, you are flirting with PISTON to VALVE clearance...

Ditto. I would port the heads, i'm just not a big fan of 1.7's for this reason and for the fact that they don't exactly give ideal valvetrain geometry.
