95 formula, all gears are fine but it pops out of reverse unless you hold it hard. Anybody know what causes that and how to fix it?

The Ford virus has infected your shifter... replace it.

 

You can check the tranny linkage. I just recently had mine adjusted. Basically Park became Reverse, Reverse became Neutral, Neutral became OD, and so on..... One of the bolts actually just fell out onto the ground where I usually park my car....I'm guessing it was caused by running over a few potholes that just appeared because of the recent rainy weather. It's worth a shot to check the linkage first I guess, although it does require you to jack up your car. There's a page about it online somewhere and it's supposed to only be a 15 minute adjustment or so.

 

Do you have an a4 or m6? If its an m6, it could be a sign your clutch is on its way out.

 

Mine has done that ever since I put in my Pro 5.0 shifter.

If I keep my hand on it when I'm backing up there isn't a problem but I pops out on occassion when I'm not paying attention.
I adjusted my stops but it doesn't really seem to help.
