Angry Popping exhuast please help!

I took out the catalytic converter on my 93 z28 and the exhaust pops upon deceleration.
I have the stock exhaust manifolds and a flowmaster muffler.

Has any one else had this problem when dumping the cats. Will headers solve this problem.
Thank you

Since the catylitic converters are not burning the unburned gas and fumes anymore, they burn in the exhaust making the popping sound.

Question

Last reply sounds good to me. But then again I have my cats and when I added my SLP loudmouth with stock manifolds and cats I too sometimes get a slight popping sound when I let off the gas after reving it up a little??? Almost like the old Glasspacks used to sound, but not quite as loud. weird...

Sometimes it is just the change in backpressure. The effect changes with different exhaust systems. Hard to say if headers will be better or worse.

I have edelbrock headers (no cats) and I pop...so no, headers won't make a difference.

Like Shoe Box said, it's just back pressure and the sound is more pronounced with an M6 as opposed to the A4. If headers will do anything it would make the popping louder, less back pressure = louder popping. Consider this a good thing. When my friend took the muffler off of his 00 Z71 5 speed and just ran on his cats it popped loud and hard, cool but annoying, this lasted three days and he got a flow master put on.

That sounds like an ignition problem, if you are on the gas and it backfires.

My friend has a 95Z with MAC headers, ORIP, stock pipe and a flow, the thing pops really loud if he revs it up to about 3500. Also when he is driving the car hard, when he shifts it pops. The car is really loud and sounds different, it has a metallic sound to it, it doesn't sound like a truck like most F bodies I have heard.

I have Jet Hot LTs and Glasspack header mufflers, you get a measly pop, I get a machine gun staccato KA-POW. Sounds like the D Day invasion.

Cool

Might check for manifold leaking problems,or vaccum leaks.
I just got off the freeway tonight, and downshiffted to 3rd from doing 75mph,down to about 30mph,and no popping or nothing(smooth),since I had the map sensor fixed.Myo2.

Mine pops too with my borla's if I start slowing down in gear but if I'm slowing down in neutral, no popping noise at all.

I like the popping noise for some reason.

SLP shorties, no cats, and no muffler made mine pop really bad. I now have an 18" bulllet and it pops some but MUCH less.
