Well, I guess my complaint would be that I bought the 97 believing that the 98s wouldn't have any more hp than the Lt1s and that belief was based on GM's low balling the HP for the Zs. So you are right. If I had purchased the Ls1, I WOULD have been thrilled, however, I didn't.

Actually, in my case the point would have been moot anyway, since I wouldn't have opted for a 98 over a 97 because the style change even if the LS1 had 100 more ponies. Too chrysler for my taste.

The title of this thread is how much HP and TQ a 1997 Camaro Z28 from the FACTORY had. When someone says whats the factory rated hp, 90% of the time they mean what did the factory rate them at. In that case, a 97 Z28 had 285hp and 325tq from the factory.

Yes, GM did lowball the LS1 for the F-Body, but it did no such thing for the LT1, because common dynos of stock LT1's show that accounting for driveline loss, you have 285 flywheel hp.

The quotes of 285hp@5200 and 325tq@2400 are correct. The LT4 made 330, not 335. '96-97 SS made 305hp and 335tq at the same rpms. It was bumped to 310 with the optional exhaust system. As for underrating hp, I have seen multiple stock LT1's dyno around 270 to the rears, meaning 285 is a little low. Granted, I have also seen them dyno as low as 245. But the LS1 is the same, producing dynos anywhere from 280-305 at the rears. And the 3.42s being the only gears with T56s is also correct.

There are quite a few people on this board who only manage to get around 250rwhp out of their car. Saying you lose 15% of that power through the driveline...that puts you at 287. Yeah, there are PLENTY of factory freaks that will dyno BONE STOCK at 270-275rwhp, but there are ALOT more that wont.

Interesting, this is the same reason I bought my 97. Didn't/don't like the nose on the 98 and newer. But I sure wish it were an LS1. However I think I can fix the hp easier than the nose.
Already put the 3:73 gears in it.

According to my sources, you have one of 19 white Convertible SS A-4s made. And maybe at this date you have the only one left. I know. Useless fact.

It's actually an M6, dark gray leather interior, black top, TOTL (without the cone), not much else. Really a basic SS, don't even get the 17" wheels on the vert.
Don't really like owning rare cars, it makes me cautious about mod'ing them. And this thing really needs more hp. Still makes me smile when I drive it.
Well, outa here til next week.
