It's very simple...

no one wants to put a big came on stock heads... the thing is... most people don't have $2XXX.00 to spend on a set of good heads... and at $2XX.00 a cam is much cheaper and proven performance. THe heads can always come later.

The problem is people are more worried about the lopey idle and peak HP than they are about a broad powerband and good drivability.

My 396 Hot Cammed motor trapped 118 mph. Now I am going to the XE 230/236 cam, and after the dyno I will determine my shift point, but if you have any suggestions, please let me know, as the dyno wont be for a couple weeks.
ps, my motor is built to rev, and heads exhaust etc to match.

Ok then, I have a question for all you cam gurus. I plan on basically making my car a street car, go to the strip every now and then. It is my only car, a daily driver, and I'm not planning on doing anything too nutty. I'm thinking bolt-ons and a cam. What would be an ideal cam for me? I don't want to rev the motor too much, maybe slightly higher than stock shift points. Driveability and a fat powerband are what I'm searching for; not sure if I'm gonna stall it or not.

CC 305 is good, Hot Cam is good. Basically stay with 210-220 duration on intake and up to 230 MAX on exhaust with a lobe sep of 112-114, lift 510-530.

I was thinking of doing the hotcam, but from the way some of the people in here are talking, it got me thinking that perhaps for my application the hotcam was a hair on the big side....maybe not though.

Hotcam is usually considered on the small side, but for lots of people its just right. CC305 is said to be a cam for automatics, 306 for A4's.

no dyno time here but with the 224/230 and Crane 10308 springs I shift at 6000...it just feels like it hits a wall much higher.

With a 224/230, you should be shifting at around 6400-6500 for best track times. If it's hitting a wall after 6000, you have problems. (springs, ignition, etc)

I agree. I dont spin my stock shortblock up that high for fear I wont be driving it home later but have seen a 3 mph increase shifting from 5500-6000.

There are a few people on this board who got really good times shifting the hotcam at 6500, but 6200-6300 should be fine.
