Please help with header install and smog/air pump lines..

Hey guys I need your help. I just finished installing my long tube headers and race y pipe (no cats) on my 97 Z28, but I do not know what to do with the lines that went to the old manifolds. I believe these lines went to the air pump. Do I just leave them open, crimp them cap them or just remove them,
I need your advice........

I took the AIR pump out completly. If you go that route you'll have to reprogram the PCM to not get a SES light.

Yeah, those would be the air pump tubes/hoses. I pulled my air pump and hoses out when I put in my headers. If you don't want to remove them for some reason, I guess that you could just cap off the tubes but I would make sure to disconnect the air pump so that it is not still trying to force air through a capped off opening and possibly overheat. Might not happen but just a thought.

Just take the air pump and tubes out. It will clean up the engine bay for one reason. You will need to cut the metal pipe that goes under the engine to get it out. Not a big deal. You will get an SES light, but it gives you a good reason to send out the PCM for a tune. Only $80 through MadZ28.com. They claim about 13HP I think, just from the tune anyway. Mention all the upgrades you have, inluding the headers. They can account for them in the tune.

When you remove the AIR pump, you will end up with a hole in the air inlet ducting where the AIR pump air supply hose used to connect. You need to put a 5/8" vacuum cap on it, or you will be pulling unfiltered air into the engine.

What are you doing about the EGR system, which is seperate from the AIR system?

It sounds like I need to take the air pump. I guess I will track down the lines to find it. Do I need another belt or a different way to route the belt????

The AIR pump is electric, not belt driven.

You have to have the AIR system "programmed out", or you will spend the rest of your life staring at the SES light. If you just leave it there, the fans may run constantly. And, if you ever have a real problem that turns on the SES light, you won't know it, because it will already be on.
