Please help with header install ASAP

Ok, so far everything is done except for the passenger side. I took the driver side manifold off, O2 sensors, all that crap, Y pipe etc.
Starter, alternator, blablabla
I have the driver side header in, slipped right in except the #1 primary is real close to the steering shaft where it bolts in....I don't know if it is going to clear or not. If it does, BARELY. If it doesn't clear, is it safe to grind the steering shaft or should I try and bend the primary of the header? Passenger side tomorrow...YAY! Frustrated....

the header is installed? it's just really close to the primary?

can't you just put the key in and turn the wheel back and forth?

I don't want to take the steering out of position because then it will be a bitch to re-install the shaft

Nah, it won't. Just make sure you don't turn the wheel more than you usually turn it with the steering shaft on or the SIR Coil will break and you'll get a nice AIR BAG light.

Are your headers Hooker LTs BTW? They should clear fine, without the plastic cover on the linkage of course.

Good luck! You'll need piles of it.

Nope, these are Pacesetter LTs...the #1 primary bends up and around, unlike Hooker's.

i don't know if it would help.....

but everyone says when you install headers, to install new motor mounts.

maybe if you put in new motor mounts it would raise the motor half an inch or so and give you a little more clearance....

just an idea

edit: actually, looking at the 2nd picture, that might make it worse....

Now's a good time to change your engine mounts anyway. Do that first - that might be your problem.

If it's not, I would dimple the header a little rather than grind the steering shaft, but that's MY opinion.

I would try it out before you go bending a perfectly good set of headers. Most of them are pretty close but they dont hit.

Doesn't look that bad to me.

Give it a shot, and fix it if you need to.

I think he might be worried about the header tube smacking into the steering shaft during hard accelleration/gear changes.

Another reason you should check your engine mounts...
