please educate me on camshaft basics

Is there such a thing as having too much lift on a camshaft and are there any negative effects on performance by having a high lift cam on a mildly ported head. Do the flow numbers of the head need to be matched to the lift of the camshaft. I am looking at installing a camshaft with .560/582 lift on a head that flows approx 245 @.500 and 250 @.600 is this too much lift for the cylinder heads? Also will a stock LT1 motor have any clearance issues with that high a lift. Thanks

There is such a thing as not enough room between the piston at TDC and Exhaust valve which if not adequate might wind up in a collision between the two resulting in a rebuild. Or maybe I'm just full of it today.

Might be advisable to clay the pistons before yougo too far.

The cam's duration and lift should be matched to the flow numbers. The intake CL should be matched to your intended use generally a +4*
